What Is Som Tam?

Som tam is a spicy and sour salad that originated in Thailand. It is made from shredded green papaya, tomatoes, chilies, peanuts, and a variety of other ingredients. The ingredients are mixed together and dressed with a dressing made from fish sauce, lime juice, and palm sugar.

Som tam has a long history in Thailand, dating back to the 16th century. It is believed to have originated in the northeastern region of the country, where papaya was abundant. The salad was originally made with just papaya, chilies, and salt, but over time, other ingredients like tomatoes and peanuts were added. Today, som tam is a popular dish throughout Thailand and is often served as a side dish or as a main course. It is known for its bold flavors and its ability to balance spicy, sour, and sweet flavors.

Where to Buy Som Tam in Thailand

Som Tam is sold everywhere in Thailand, from road-side vendors, to high-end restaurants. But one of the most popular places to buy som tam is in the bustling food court of a Thai mall, where, surrounded by the aroma of sizzling street food and the chatter of hungry shoppers, a rustic-looking display catches the eye. The display is adorned with vibrant colors and the inviting aroma of freshly prepared som tam, a spicy and sour salad made from shredded green papaya, tomatoes, chilies, and a variety of other ingredients. The fake plastic plates, crafted to resemble real plates of food, add a touch of whimsy and creativity to the display, beckoning passersby to stop and sample the delicious offerings.

One of the most common places to buy som tam in Thailand is from these vendors in food courts, where the dish is often served as a side dish or as a main course. A plate of Thai som tam typically costs between 40-50 baht, making it an affordable and delicious option for foodies looking to experience the authentic flavors of Thailand. The photo captures the essence of the food court experience, where the sights, smells, and sounds of food being prepared and enjoyed come together to create an unforgettable culinary adventure.

Som Tam can be orders to eat in (and served on a plate) or to take away (and served in a clear plastic bag). I opted to take away and here's a shot of my som tam when I arrived home.

Som tam is traditionally eaten with sticky rice and can be eaten on its own, or alongside some grilled meat, like grilled pork, chicken, or seafood.
